Description

This is a collection of selected true touches of Stedman Caters up to 168 changes in length, with an indication of the musical content of each touch. Touches up to 111 changes use bobs and singles and longer touches use only bobs. The touches are listed in notation using a '-' for a plain six, 'B' for a bobbed six and 'S' for a single. The touches are in groups of each length, being arranged in order with plain sixes first, then bobs and then singles. The most musical courses in Caters compositions are by tradition those with plain course endings (..789 at backstroke), tittums endings (..978 at backstroke) and handstroke-home endings (..879 at backstroke). These qualities were assessed for each touch by counting the numbers of sixes with 789 in the plain course, tittums and handstroke home coursing orders, these three numbers following each touch. The following musical rows occur in a few of these touches, and these touches are marked with code letters:

Musical rows:
Code NameRow

For example, the touch of 82 changes, '-B-BS-BS--B-BB' (2 4 5S 7 8S 11 13 14) contains two sixes with 789 in plain course order, none in tittums and none in handstroke-home, giving the music code '2 0 0'.

Extension of touches

Touches of Stedman Caters can be doubled in length by inserting a single and repeating the calling. This single can replace any bob or can be inserted in any plain six. Touches containing only bobs will always be true when extended like this, but touches containing singles may be false when extended. (These can also be doubled by omitting a single or by replacing a single with a bob.)
